I want to get an iPhone 4g for my girlfriend for her birthday but am planning on canceling the ATT plan with an early termination fee.

$325 - Early Termination Fee (you'll have to wait 30 days to cancel the contract, because they will take the phone back beforehand)

If you're planning on putting it on another network make note that cancelling the contract doesn't unlock it. You will still have to do that on your own.
